Modern Day Re/sonance: The Electronica Club
Article, Groove Vol. 17 Issue 3, November 15, 2005
(~608 words)
On Tuesday, November 15th, at 7:30pm in room F12 of 22 the Fenway, the Electronica Club will be hosting the release party of their very first compilation album. Entitled Re/sonance, the CD features 14 tracks of various forms of electronic music ranging from the glitchy, to house, and even R&B. The CD and the club represent a side of Berklee that not many outside the Music Synthesis Department might be too aware of, that of computer-based music creation.
The compilation features 14 tracks covering a wide range of styles. The only limitation imposed on all submissions was that a single song must be under six minutes. The quality and sophistication throughout the CD is very consistent, so much so that I don’t think I can pick out one or two favorites; one should check them all out.
In addition to the release party of their first compilation album, there are many projects in the works. On the 21st, the club will be hosting a Caf show, which will feature live visual art and two turntablists from the Turntable Club, in addition to the music of the Electronica Club. Also, DJ Endo (a.k.a. Mike Henderson) is preparing to have a regular radio show on BIRN (Berklee Internet Radio Network www.theBIRN.com) on behalf of the Electronica Club. Another project the club is working on is a website (www.electronicaberklee.tk), which will provide a database of various electronica musicians at Berklee for bands/producers/songwriters who want to assimulate certain electronic music styles into their songs and projects. The website will also provide information about upcoming shows of both Berklee students and famous artists touring in the area. There will also be sections of the site dedicated to information about the latest technologies.
The club meets Thursdays at 1pm in room 303 of the 136 Mass Ave building. Meetings are very well attended (with an attendance of roughly 20-30), and they are a time to discuss ongoing projects and possible new projects, as well as organize software group buys, tutorial presentations and demonstrations. There are 127 members of the club, with about 40 that are actively dedicated to the group. Membership isn’t limited to just Music Synthesis majors, and the club enthusiastically supports people of diverse backgrounds and majors to join and interact with the club. The club also works with other student clubs, including BIRN and the Turntable Club. The Electronica Club has also worked with visual artists from MassArt as well.
The club was started in the Spring of 2004 by Pierce Warnecke, with the purpose of “trying to establish and maintain an electronic community” both inside Berklee and out in the greater Boston area. Starting this Fall semester, the leadership duties have been passed on to Toby Benson, with Warnecke still very much a part of the club as vice-president. The faculty advisor to the club is Michael Bierylo, Associate Professor of the Music Synthesis Department, who actively participates in the club, attending most meetings and keeping students abreast of the latest developments in music technology. Also, Bierylo’s wife, a graphic designer, assisted Warnecke and company in designing the Electronica Club’s complication CD.
The club hopes to attract and collaborate with more people in other areas of the college and beyond, and they’re looking to put on more concerts both inside Berklee and out in the greater Boston area. With each passing semester, they seem to be steadily progressing, upping the ante with each project. So go check out the Electronica Club as they perform twice this month and find out what the new generation of technology has done to open up new and exciting possibilities in music.
